If someone faints (loses consciousness for a short time), here is what you should do:
Immediate Steps
-
Lay the person down on their back. If possible, raise their legs about 12 inches above heart level to improve blood flow to the brain.
-
Loosen tight clothing (belts, collars, scarves) to help breathing and circulation.
-
Ensure fresh air by opening a window or moving them to a well-ventilated area.
-
Check responsiveness: gently shake their shoulder and ask if they are okay.
While They Are Unconscious
-
Check breathing and pulse. If absent, call emergency services immediately and begin CPR.
-
Keep the airway clear: turn their head to the side if they vomit, to prevent choking.
-
Do not give anything by mouth while they are unconscious.
When They Regain Consciousness
-
Encourage them to stay lying down for several minutes to prevent another fainting episode.
-
Offer water once they are fully alert.
-
Ask about symptoms before fainting (chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath), as these may indicate serious conditions.
Call Emergency Services if:
-
The person does not regain consciousness within 1–2 minutes.
-
They have chest pain, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, or confusion afterward.
-
They fainted after exercise or injury.
-
They are pregnant or have a known heart condition.
Prevention for Future Episodes
-
Avoid standing for long periods without movement.
-
Stay well-hydrated.
-
Rise slowly from sitting or lying down.
-
Seek medical evaluation if fainting occurs repeatedly.
