When someone breaks a bone (fracture), it is a serious injury that requires immediate care to prevent further damage. Correct first aid can reduce pain, bleeding, and complications until medical help arrives.
Step 1: Call for Help
-
Dial emergency services immediately if:
-
The bone is sticking out (open fracture)
-
There is heavy bleeding
-
The person is unresponsive, not breathing, or in shock
-
The injury involves the head, neck, back, hip, or pelvis
-
Step 2: Keep the Person Still
-
Ask them to remain as still and calm as possible.
-
Do not try to move them unless absolutely necessary (e.g., danger at the scene).
Step 3: Control Bleeding (if present)
-
Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or bandage.
-
If bone is protruding, do not push it back in. Cover with a sterile dressing.
Step 4: Immobilize the Injury
-
Do not straighten the bone.
-
Support the injured limb in the position found.
-
Use a splint (a firm object like a board, rolled newspaper, or stick) padded with cloth. Secure it above and below the fracture site with bandages or strips of cloth.
-
If no splint is available, immobilize by securing the injured limb to the body (e.g., arm to chest with a sling).
Step 5: Apply Ice
-
Place an ice pack wrapped in cloth on the injured area to reduce swelling and pain.
-
Do not apply ice directly on skin.
Step 6: Treat for Shock
-
Lay the person down, keep them warm, and reassure them.
-
If possible, elevate legs unless it causes pain or the fracture is in the leg, pelvis, or spine.
Step 7: Do Not
-
Do not try to realign or push bones back.
-
Do not give food or drink (in case surgery is needed).
-
Do not move the injured person unnecessarily.
While Waiting for Help
-
Monitor breathing and circulation.
-
Be prepared to start CPR if the person becomes unresponsive.
